You could just draw someone in a forlorn landscape... Or someone who's alone on a really small island out in the sea... Or someone standing somewhere (maybe a setting related to the book) and building a walls around her/him on all four sides. Or someone alone on top of a mountain. Looking at the world through a window.
The world is behind the isolated one, reflected (second-hand) in a mirror.
Someone alone in very long hallway with an openwork security gate bolted across the way, with things ';happening'; down at the other end, which we can't quite make out.
A party scene, with one person alone in an alcove or corner, and everyone else enjoying the party with their backs to him/her.
