Why do we include antibiotics in the medium when cultures are grown for plasmid isolation?

Obviously to inhibit growth of whats unwanted...im just having trouble connecting the two.Why do we include antibiotics in the medium when cultures are grown for plasmid isolation?
This is because most plasmids have a gene for antibiotic resistance. Including this antibiotic in the medium provides selective pressure on the bacteria. The only bacteria that can grow are those that have plasmid. Any bacteria that have lost the plasmid will be killed off. This will help give maximal yields for the plasmid prep.

It's not so much to keep out unwanteds - if you are using appropriate sterile technique, this should be take care of.
