Why does isolation help in breaking down someone mentally? Is this also similar to dementia?

what is the difference in the two also?

For example anyone who has seen the movie ';Castaway';........ is this a case of dementia or mental break down?

why and how so?

what causes it?

Thanks for your answers! Why does isolation help in breaking down someone mentally? Is this also similar to dementia?
humans by nature are social animals when people are isolated (conversation) is replaced by inward thoughts , when this happens over a prolonged period normal thoughts become blurred and distorted if this process continues it has the effect of compounding belief in what under normal conditions the same person might normally consider not correct or even bizarre. interaction with others keeps us on track with normal behaviour and beliefs this is lost in isolation. On the matter of dementia this is less phychiatric and more deteriation of brain in a physiological sense, they are different. Why does isolation help in breaking down someone mentally? Is this also similar to dementia?
Because fundamentally human beings are social creatures that like to congregate in groups. This can be in families, villages, towns etc.

The lack of communication and other human contact forces the human brain to turn in on itself and gradually the walls of reality become strained giving way to hallucinations, talking to oneself etc.

Dementia is more or an illness rather than the same thing but the results can be fairly similar.
It is like an addict, when you take away their drugs they start to go a little off the wall. Well most people are use to social action one way or another and when you take it away, you take away something they always had, Since they don't have it anymore they act like my example.
Being locked away I don't know how and I don't know what causes it sorry for the lame answer!
