Can your immune system crash from isolation?

I have been living alone with my kids basically like a hermit for the past 2 years since my husband died. Can my immune system crash? I just got a job working with small children and have been sick off and on since. Can your immune system crash from isolation?
Sorry to hear about ur husband :(

your immune system is affected a lot of by ur mental state and sicne you've been in isolation for a while your bodys defences are likely to have weekened due to stress and sadness. Also since you have been ';living like a hermit'; you have prevented exposure to bugs and viruses so your body hasnt not build resistance to them. Now that you are out and about, you are in greater contact with these nasties and they are affecting u easily. Just try to be healthy and hygenic and your bodys defenses should be up and ready in no time :) Also small children seem to be sick constantly so you are exposed to an unsually greater amount of bacteria! Can your immune system crash from isolation?
Isolation in and of itself can result in stress which decreases immune function. And your stress levels are probably even higher because of the death of your husband as well the increased responsibility of taking care of your children alone. However, the most likely reason for your being sick more often is that you are working with small children. Kids are always getting colds and spreading their germs on everything they touch, and every time they sneeze/cough. Here's what to do. Take 500 mg of vitamin C and 250 mg of Echinacea (available in most drug stores) once in the morning and again before going to bed. This combination has been shown clinically to prevent colds (though it will do nothing once you catch a cold). Also, WASH your hands frequently. Carry a small bottle of antibacterial gel in your pocket. Use it when you can't wash your hands. Good luck.
Since the first poster already explained what is going on, I thought I might add in a bit: your immune system isn't crashing, you are just getting exposed to all the new stuff that is going around. So, as you fight that off, you are getting your immune system revved up actually.

When I was teaching preschool and volunteering in the elementary schools I was sick all the time. I think I ran a constant fever of 99.8 all the time, lol! I would just get well over holiday and then come back, and all the stuff the kids have caught over break from their friends and family, they come in and share with the rest of the class.

Also, once I got well, if I switched classes, I would get sick AGAIN! it is like every class has their own germ ecosystem and if you get all the antibodies to that one you are ok and well, but the second you get exposed to a new environment, then BAM! sick again!

If you continue to get ill, then you may want to see a doctor, just to make sure you are not harboring strep in your nails or sinuses or something like that. Good Luck and I hope you get well soon!
