Metals are often separated from ores by reduction. The metal may be in an oxidized state. Heating the ore above the metal melting point in the presence of a fuel (carbon) and oxygen may allow the oxygen to leave the ore and combine with the carbon. The slag (minerals) if molten will float on the liquid metal and may be poured or skimmed off.
