Do you think that as people become more socially isolated (which a variety of studies has shown), gossip about celebrities is replacing neighborhood gossip? What do you think about this theory: Isolation is leading to increased interest in the lives of celebrities?
';Gosh masb1987, I believe you have struck gold with your hypothesis; however, the only fact that might betray you is that many people (1.6 billion of um') have cell phones to connect to relatives, friends and acquaintances. They're never far away from anyone and have instant access.
The gossip about celebrities is definitely accelerating. I've witnessed it from my own son. He stays ';cool'; by observing their petty, disingenuous lives. Of course, I will read or watch some event about them and feel relieved that I'm not one of them. To confirm your question, I feel certain that neighborhood gossip is being replaced ...in fact has been replaced.
I felt like acquiring some websites as proof would be an idea, but, there were so many that it became a useless endeavor to in-source them here.';What do you think about this theory: Isolation is leading to increased interest in the lives of celebrities?
i like it---and it is testable, in a way. just give people a measure of social isolation and then measure the extent to which they like celebrity gossip and neighborhood gossip---it should be the case (according to the theory) that very socially isolated people are more likely to enjoy celebrity gossip while un-isolated people like neighborhood gossip.
i can think of examples of friends of mine that fit your theory perfectly....
I don't agree with that statement. I think we are more isolated because of the communications industry but we are exposed to more in media and internet.
We've always had curiosity about celebs but now it's coming out hardcore simply for the fact that it's now more accessible.
