What affect can isolation have on the mind?

Say you're stranded on an island for 5 years, and then return to society. Would you be able to adapt to society again, easily or would it be hard to cope for a while? What affect can isolation have on the mind?
It very much would depend on the individual, her strengths and weaknesses. One could become stronger and thoughtful, deeper, wiser. One one could be spoiled by the quiet and lack of rush and lack of noise and overwhelming sensory input. One could, on the other hand, also become depressed, and hence less ready to face civilization.

I think coming back, though, would take adjustment, would be hard for a while, for sure. For some more than others. What affect can isolation have on the mind?
I think it would be hard to cope. You would forget all the social cues,

non verbal stuff, and it would be stressful to relearn them all.

But on the plus side, you might come back a more thoughtful person and a little less hypocritical.
For 5 years?

I'd probably drive myself barmy just for something to do.
